Lyrics
1. There is a land of pure delight,
Where saints immortal reign,
Infinite day excludes the night,
And pleasures banish pain.
2. There everlasting spring abides,
And never withering flowers:
Death, like a narrow sea, divides
This heav’nly land from ours.
3. Sorrow and pain, and every care,
And discord there shall cease;
And perfect joy and love sincere
Adorn the realms of peace.
4. The soul, from sin for ever free,
Shall mourn its power no more;
But clothed in spotless purity,
Redeeming love adore.
5. Sweet fields beyond
the swelling flood
Stand dressed in living green:
So to the Jews old Canaan stood,
While Jordan rolled between.
6. But timorous mortals
start and shrink
To cross this narrow sea;
And linger, shiv’ring on the brink,
And fear to launch away.
7. O could we make our doubts remove,
Those gloomy thoughts that rise,
And see the Canaan that we love
With unbeclouded eyes!
8. Could we but climb where Moses stood,
And view the landscape o’er,
Not Jordan’s stream, nor death’s cold flood,
Should fright us from the shore.
9. There I shall bathe my weary soul
In seas of heav’nly rest,
And not a wave of trouble roll
Across my peaceful breast.
10. When we’ve been there
ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun;
We’ve no less days
to sing God’s praise
Than when we first begun.
